Episode 98: Wildlife Watch

Imagine trying to monitor the movement of 250 wild black swans or 300 wild kangaroos? It's a challenging task for a small group of researchers!  But zoologists from the University of Melbourne have come up with an ingenious way to manage the problem. They have enlisted the help of an army of citizen scientists – members of the public who contribute information to scientific projects via the internet!

Citizen scientists from all over Victoria provide the researchers with regular reports on the whereabouts of tagged animals. The swan research group has designed an innovative website, www.myswan.org.au, to make it easy for people to submit swan sightings. People who submit a sighting are provided with an instant profile of the bird they saw and as such, the community, as well as the researchers, are starting to learn more and more about the animals.
