Victoria has the largest number of vineyards and wineries in Australia,
and new University of Melbourne research has shed light on a strain of
bacteria that may help alleviate frost damage to grapes. Our second
story takes us to the coast, where the University is setting up a
Coasts and Climate Research Centre at Point Nepean.
Vineyard Ice Bacteria:
University of Melbourne researchers
have identified bacteria in grapes which trigger frost damage - a
problem that causes average crop losses of more than $33 million a year
in Victoria and South Australia. According to a recent study at the
University of Melbourne’s Dookie Campus, the bacteria Pseudomonas
syringae - known to be present on vines in the US - have been
identified for the first time in Australia.

University of Melbourne is to become the anchor tenant on historic
Point Nepean, where it will establish a new, multi-purpose Coasts and
Climate Research Centre.
