Smell Linked to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder:
In the week
of this years Anzac Day commemorations, researchers from the University
of Melbourne and Austin Health have announced a discovery connecting
the inability to identify smell with post traumatic stress disorder in
Vietnam Veterans. Over 30 Vietnam Veterans with PTSD were recruited
from the Austin Health’s Veterans Psychiatry Unit to smell 40 scratch
and sniff odours including lemon, lilac, pinecones, smoke and natural
gas. The study revealed that Vietnam Veterans suffering PTSD had an
impaired ability to identify smell. With further testing, it is hoped
the smell test will become a tool to diagnosis the condition.
