Episode 39: Large Hadron Collider and UFO PhD

With the end of 2008 arriving quickly, Episode 39 looks to the future and looks to the stars.  Visions goes behind the scenes at the launch of one of the world's biggest scientific experiments, the Large Hadron Collider.  We also chat to a researcher who has investigated UFO sightings.

More information

Recreating the Big Bang:
With the world watching, one of the biggest scientific experiments, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), at the CERN laboratories in Geneva Switzerland was switched on for the first time on 10 Sept 2008.

The LHC is an underground accelerator developed to recreate the exact events of the beginning of the universe.  Scientists aim to study the collision of particles accelerated around the LHC, to understand how matter and the universe were formed.

The University of Melbourne is one of only two Australian universities to be involved in the project.

Dr Who?:
A researcher who investigated the mysterious world of UFO sightings, ufology and ufologists has been awarded a PhD by the University of Melbourne.

The figure of 4 million Americans believing they have been abducted by aliens is sourced from the 1991 Roper Poll, "UFOs & Etraterrestrial Life Americans' Beliefs and Personal Experiences".
